Make the exchange legible
Tell people what they will receive, who is sending it, and how often. The incentive should preview the quality and subject of future messages rather than attract an unrelated audience.
Keep the signup record and honor the scope of consent. Buying a list or quietly adding contacts creates risk and erodes the signal that makes email valuable.
Design for continued permission
Every message should help the subscriber recognize the sender and understand why it arrived. Use accurate subject lines, a valid postal address where required, and a clear unsubscribe path. Process opt-outs promptly and suppress the address across the relevant sending systems.
Measure trust, not list size
Growth without attention is an expensive vanity metric. Watch replies, qualified clicks, complaints, unsubscribes, and downstream customer value. Segment only when it makes the experience more relevant, not to disguise excessive frequency.
The generous approach is simple: set a clear expectation, deliver something worthwhile, and make leaving painless.
