Expert Interview Questions for Product Research

Good questions ask for decisions, examples, limits, and evidence instead of inviting a polished biography.

State the purpose and rights before recording

Tell the guest whether the interview is research, editorial material, or part of a paid product. Record consent for the intended recording, editing, publication, promotion, and reuse. A commercial relationship or compensation belongs in the disclosure plan.

Ask questions that expose the work

Use follow-ups that request a recent example, the decision made, the evidence available, the alternative rejected, and the result observed.

  • What happened the last time you faced this problem?
  • Which signal changed your decision?
  • What did you try first, and why did it fail?
  • Where does your method stop working?
  • What source or record would let a reader verify this claim?
  • What would you do differently with half the time or budget?

Separate quotation review from editorial control

Let the guest correct factual errors and clarify meaning. Do not promise approval over the entire piece unless that arrangement is explicit. Preserve the recording, consent record, edit notes, and final publication date.
